Would you want your boss to “friend” you on Facebook? Are you obligated to invite all of your colleagues to join your LinkedIn network? Social networking tools have pushed these questions and others about the personal-professional boundary to the fore.
Most companies don’t have rules or even accepted etiquette about these issues, yet they can cause serious disruption and conflict among colleagues. While it may be difficult to establish a protocol to directly address these questions, try asking your employees what they think. By gathering input and starting the conversation, you can gain important insight and lay the groundwork for healthy work relationships in the age of social networking.
