It can be exciting to get an assignment to work in London or Mumbai, but it can also be stressful. Here are three tips for negotiating a short-term relocation that works for you:
- Negotiate flexible terms. People who feel in control of an overseas assignment generally feel more positive about it. Ask for flexibility around traveling home and family visits, and be sure the duration of the assignment is clear.
- Be sure you are compensated. Employees may need to hire help to do things in their absence (e.g., childcare and household help). Ask your employer to compensate you for these additional expenses.
- Request cross-cultural training. Working in a different culture requires a different way of thinking. With appropriate training, you can hit the ground running.
